Bali Sightseeing - Culture and Nature in Central and East Bali
The best way to see more of Bali is to go on a Bali sightseeing day trip, either driving yourself or going with a Bali driver. One of our favorite day trips is starting from Ubud village and heading to East Bali towards Sideman region as it takes you along wonderful cultural sights and beautiful rice- and mountain landscapes.
If you start this Bali sightseeing day trip from Ubud you will soon arrive at the first highlights of the day: Goa Gajah located towards Bedulu or Gunung Kawi in Tempaksering which is 20 minutes further. If it's still early in the morning you can check out both, otherwise it's better to choose just one.
These highlights are both ancient temples. While Goa Gajah is set around a old bathing pool surrounded by forest and ricefields, in Gunung Kawi you can find ancient tombs located within stunning ricefields.
After a visit to the temple complex the Bali sightseeing daytrip continues to Kintamani. Kintamani is blessed with stunning views of Mount Batur and it's lake. The restaurants in Kintamani are a very popular place to stop as they offer buffet lunch with front row tables of the stunning view.
From Kintamani we head south again passing Rendang. From here you can turn left to visit the most important temple for the Balinese: Besakih temple. However in my opinion Besakih is not that impressive for visitors unless there is a Bali ceremony taking place.
In the area of Rendang you will drive along amazing rice terraces that are very typical for Bali island. Don't forget to stop once in a while to make pictures.
From here you gradually drive into a different landscape of Iseh in Sideman region. Iseh has become famous for it's picturesque landscape of agriculture, mountains, rivers and the majestic Mount Agung which seems to appear every where on a cloudless day.
Sideman region has attracted famous artists such as Walter Spies for whom this beautiful landscape and friendly people were a source of inspiration.
In this part of Bali island you will also drive through little villages where you will see beautiful Balinese daily scenes such as women balancing baskets on their heads, carvers making ornaments for temples, men and women working in the fields and most of all children with huge smiles waving when you pass by.
The road will eventually take you into the city of Klungkung. From 1710 till 1908 Klungkung used to be the center of the Gelgel-dynasty. The Taman Gili Palace located in the center of the city is one of the important remains of this dynasty.
Klungkung is the final stop of our favorite Bali sightseeing daytrip as from here you continue driving to Gianyar and finally end at Ubud.
