To the people living here Bali is known as the Island of the Gods, Pulau-Dewata literally meaning Gods Island or heaven. Its indigenous population is made up of many generations of artists and ancient island royalty, resulting in Bali having a thriving culture of unique arts and crafts. Your personal choice of souvenirs maybe anything from the Bali handicrafts, to Bali clothing or so many of the other different forms of art from Bali. Also, for some the more discerning individuals among us, Bali offers a wealth of creative opportunities for manufacturing many such items easily and often to our own designs. Who knows what your passion is, you may be a professional designer, a landscaping artist or maybe just a happy holiday maker, but who ever you are, I'm sure Bali will not fail to delight and indulge your senses.
Bali has almost anything your heart could desire from household décor to batik art, the latter in the form of an abundance of sarongs and kimonos or even just simple stylish batik shirts, in so many of its stores. Its local manufacturers have many, usually family run, workshops producing a vast array of products such as beautiful handmade boxes or baskets, contemporary wooden sculptures and amusingly crafted wooden masks. There are also a great deal of lovely ceramics here that include a huge selection of pots and tiles, or Bali mosaic vases and frames. The variety of styles and designs of Jewelry here also is quite overwhelming to may customers, from Bali silver balls, and seashell jewelry, to precious stone set in beautifully hand crafted silver or gold settings. There is truly some worthy gift to be purchased for any and every taste.
Pottery can be found almost anywhere on the island at many of the roadside shops and stalls but if you are looking for something very special you could try Jenggala Keramik in the Jimbaran area.
One of the most exceptional skills the Balinese have is for their beautiful woodcarving and the variations you discover here are always plentiful and unique. The exceptionally intricate workmanship on their Bali doors is amazing, but they can just as easily delight you with their work on a modest hand carved picture frame. There are many fine examples of this type of work in the streets surrounding Ubud, in the centre of Bali, but also some on display at the Jimbaran Gallery.
They can, and do, lovingly apply their great sculpting skills to producing fine stonework and interesting furniture also, resulting in a highly original choice of Bali statues and beautifully finished handmade furniture.
The cute and very decorative Balinese umbrellas are also widely produced here as they are in constant demand of their local ceremonies and festivals. The island also offers much locally grown produce and spices, chili, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla pods for example or even cocoa beans and café luwak are all produced here also These are usually easily available in handy small sizes for your holiday kitchen or souvenir needs.
Many of the beautiful Bali products can easily be found in the markets in the main towns, Ubud, Sukawati and Bedigul are probably your best destinations for some serious holiday shopping though, so leave yourself some room in your luggage. Happy Shopping!
